Reverse roll coating is one of the most versatile methods for applying moderate-to-heavy coat weights of viscous fluids. The counter-rotating applicator roll meters a precise film that transfers with excellent uniformity and minimal streaking.
How reverse roll coating works
Three primary rolls — metering, applicator, and backing — work together. The coating fluid forms a precise film between the metering and applicator rolls. The web contacts the applicator roll where the coating transfers. Coat weight is controlled by the metering gap.
How IMC engineers reverse roll stations
Each roll is independently driven, eliminating gear-train backlash. Roll positioning uses precision mechanical adjustment with positive locking. Rolls are ground to tight TIR tolerances. The assembly is mounted in rigid, vibration-damped frames.
A closely related method — comma coating — replaces the cylindrical metering roll with a comma-shaped blade.
