IMC winding system for precision roll building

Winding is the process of collecting web material onto a core to form a finished roll. It appears simple until you consider that the roll must maintain consistent tension, density, and alignment from the core to the outside — across thousands of meters of material and through variations in web thickness, surface texture, and environmental conditions. A poorly wound roll telescopes, creates starred edges, produces blocking between layers, or unwinds unevenly in the next process step.

IMC winding systems are engineered for consistent, defect-free roll building across the full range of web materials and formats. Configurations include center winding, surface winding, and center-surface combination winding, with turret and single-position options.

Winder configurations

Turret winders mount multiple winding positions on a rotating turret, allowing automatic roll changeover without stopping the web. Essential for continuous production operations where the upstream process cannot stop for roll changes.

Center winders drive the roll from the core shaft, with tension controlled by the torque applied to the shaft. Suited for materials that are sensitive to surface contact or where the roll must have a specific internal tension profile.

Surface winders drive the roll by contact with a driven roller on the outside surface. Provides inherently constant surface speed and is well suited for materials that benefit from controlled nip pressure during winding.

Duplex winders provide two winding positions side by side with automatic transfer between them. More compact than turret designs while still enabling continuous operation.

Applications

  • Battery electrode winding
  • Film and foil winding
  • Coated material winding
  • Laminate winding
  • And any web converting application requiring consistent
  • Defect-free roll building at production speed

Multi-roll winding done right

When several slit strips wind on one shaft, differential rewind shafts and per-position lay-on rollers hold tension and roll density lane by lane. Essential for electrode and thin-film slitting — and standard thinking in IMC winder design. See electrode slitting →
