Why edge waviness happens
Electrode calendering compacts the coated center of the web — the active material elongates under nip pressure. The uncoated foil margins cannot elongate at the same rate. The mismatch relieves itself as waves: edge waviness and bagginess, slitting defects, winding issues, and cells that fail quality gates before formation.
The defect worsens with thicker electrodes, higher compaction ratios, and faster line speeds — the same directions the industry is moving.
How EdgeSet works
Heated calender rolls, multi-stage compaction, tension adjustments, and profiled roll crowns all address the symptom. None address why the edges and center behave differently in the first place. EdgeSet conditions the foil margins upstream of the nip, pre-treating the edges to match the elongation that calendering will impose. When the web enters the calender, center and edges are far closer to equilibrium — dramatically reducing waviness across the full width, and with it the downstream defects it generates.

EdgeSet installs upstream of the calender and operates independently. No modification to the calender, no integration with its control system, no change to your qualified densification recipe. It fits existing lines — new or legacy, IMC-built or any other manufacturer — and is available factory-integrated on new IMC calenders. Chemistry and material scope
EdgeSet development has centered on lithium-ion electrode materials, and the underlying elongation-mismatch physics is not chemistry-specific: wherever a compressed coated region meets an uncompressed margin — in next-generation cells, fuel cell and MEA processing, or coated films generally — the same mechanism, and the same treatment, applies.
