The coating process defines the membrane

In membrane manufacturing, the coating is the functional element. Pore structure, thickness, and surface characteristics are established during coating and phase inversion. The substrate provides mechanical support but contributes little to filtration performance. The coating machine creates the product.

Coating and casting methods

Slot die casting where precise uniform thickness is critical. Pre-metered flow provides direct wet film control. Servo-positioned carriages with Coriolis flow control.

Knife-over-roll casting for heavier films, porous nonwoven supports, or when polymer solution properties favor blade casting.

Solvent management

Membrane solutions use NMP, DMF, DMAc, acetone. IMC engineers solvent-rated systems as such from initial design, drawing on decades of NMP-rated battery coating experience.

Phase inversion and drying

Quench bath integration for immersion precipitation. Multi-zone drying with temperature, airflow, and humidity control for vapor-induced and evaporation processes. Post-inversion drying as a process-critical section.

Web handling for porous substrates

Tension control designed for nonwoven extensibility. Roller specifications for porous materials. Web path geometry accommodating changing properties as the membrane forms.
